Dallas Video Festival Morphs

The Video Association of Dallas begins its third decade with a new twist.  “After twenty years we decided to shake things up a bit,” says founder and Artistic Director Bart Weiss.

In prior years the Video Association has produced The Dallas Video Festival as a four-day marathon with over 250 screenings of independent, alternative, and non-commercial media.  This year VAD will present two separate series.

The first series, called THE PROGRAM, will showcase video art and other media-based art. The FREE exhibitions begin on July 26 and continue for five consecutive Saturday evenings (times vary) at Conduit Gallery, 1626 Hi Line Drive, in the Design District.

The Dallas Video Festival occurs October 3 -5 at the Angelika Film Center at Mockingbird Station, 5321 East Mockingbird.  It will present documentaries and other varieties of video from around the world. Patrons may purchase day passes or All-Festival passes making this Festival the best deal in town (no per film tickets).

Exhibitions at THE PROGRAM will include compilations of single-channel works, installations, and performances.  The works presented in the Saturday evening showcases will remain on view at Conduit Gallery during the following week.

THE PROGRAM has been curated by Charles Dee Mitchell, a Dallas-based art writer, and Carolyn Sortor, an artist and long-time supporter of the Video Association of Dallas.  In the summer of 2007, Ms. Sortor worked with Danette Dufilho of Conduit Gallery and assembled a series of video art programs drawn from the archives of the Video Association.  “The turnout for those programs,” she reports, “confirmed that we have reached a tipping-point for public interest in video as an art medium.”

THE PROGRAM will include area premieres for many artists well known on the international circuit,” says Mr. Mitchell. “Whether they work at their kitchen tables, on a laptop, or use the crews, casts, and locations associated with feature filmmaking, these artists are producing narrative projects that are both challenging and entertaining.”

In addition to the exhibitions at Conduit Gallery, THE PROGRAM will offer free screenings at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell Street, on August 5th and 12th at 7 p.m.  And on August 10, the Dallas Museum of Art, 1717 North Harwood, will host a free panel discussion with screenings at 1:30pm in their Center for Creative Connections.

The Dallas Video Festival is supported, in part, by, City of Dallas, Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Texas Commission for the Art.
