August 20, 2012

Location: Angelika Film Center—Dallas
Time: 7:30 p.m.

SEARCHING FOR SONNY

We’ve joined the Texas Independent Film Network and the Angelika Film Center to present a series of Texas-made indie films screened with the filmmakers in attendance.

Each month, Starting in August, we will show one of four films that are traveling to cities throughout the state to promote Texas Film and to expose new audiences to some of the states most talented directors, producers and talent. It’s a great chance to support local film, meet the filmmakers and discuss filmmaking in Texas.

The screenings are $10 and open to the public. We have limited free seats available for DFS Members who show their membership card at the theater.

SEARCHING FOR SONNY

With Director Andrew Disney in attendance.

When directionless twenty-something Elliot Knight attends his 10-year reunion in Texas, a complex murder mystery leads his crew of high school pals on a mission to find their missing friend, Sonny. Elliot enlists the help of his fraternal twin Calvin, a pot-smoking barista, his timorous former classmate Gary Noble, and his high school sweetheart Eden Mercer.

While digging up a forgotten time capsule, the friends discover the body of Eden’s husband, and find themselves the chief suspects in his murder. The mystery turns meta when the three bumbling friends discover that everything happening seems eerily similar to a play they performed in high school — a play Sonny wrote. Deception leads to problems, and it soon seems that shady businessmen and school officials are involved in a complex scheme of money and murder.

The event aims at presenting works to a broad audience, at creating circulations between different art practices and between different audiences, as well as creating new exchanges between artists, filmmakers and professionals.
It seeks to contribute to a reflection on our contemporary culture of image via a compelling program opened to everyone.

The Macktez Summer Stipend is a grant for creative development. Each year UnionDocs reaches out to the many junior designers, interns, and other creative individuals they come across every day for whom a little extra cash could be the difference between a great idea and a great, finished project. The criteria is simple: originality, relevance, and conviction, with a preference towards projects already underway that $1000 would push across the finish line. This year’s panelists include: David Israel, Roanne Adams, Douglas Morris, Dean Crutchfield, Bethany Koby Santiago Matheus, Jeffrey Zeldman. Apply online here by July 27th.

By Eric Martin

It was at SXSW 2011 that someone tweeted about realizing that not all their clients had smartphones and tablets, followed by a telling hashtag: #beyondthebubble.

This was followed by a tweet from our friends at Native Public Media, heralding the wonderful achievement of reservation homes surpassing the 75 percent mark for landline phone penetration.

Seeing these two tweets back-to-back just showed how out of touch many of those in the SXSW bubble were with the rest of the country—especially rural and poor areas.

A few weeks ago Andrew Sarris passed away and I am sorry to take so long to get around to talking about it. Sarris was a teacher of mine when I went to Columbia University for my MFA in the late 70′s. One day in class Sarris said you should never see a film before noon, because you have not come to terms with your dreams yet. I thought that sounded profound at the time; but really I cannot remember my dreams two minutes after I wake up, so I think we have both been using this as an excuse not to see films too early. Actually, it is important to pace my film watching. If I watch too many experimental films when its late in the day, I will fall asleep. But back to Sarris, in the U.S. he was the one who championed the auteur theory. That basically states that the author of a film is the director (screenwriters have never been okay with this). Further, he would say you need to look at a body of work from a great director and you can see trends in themes, ways of using the camera, and other tools of cinema. We take this for granted now, but at the time it was important. Film criticism was also important then. Cinefiles would have long discussions not just about the films they were seeing but also about their writing. Don’t get me wrong, we have good film critics like Chris Vognar; but he didn’t get as much ink as Sarris did, but Sarris did not compete with a million film review websites.

Back when I was his student he was in the midst of a very public battle with Pauline Kael who wrote for the New Yorker. The battle was as entertaining as the films they wrote about. More than anything, Sarris championed directors he loved. Before I took his class I was not really interested in Preston Sturges, but after he showed us Sullivan’s Travels I could see the joy and art in the writing and directing in comedies I had dismissed. He also shared his love for All About Eve. His greatest gift was his joy in talking about Sunrise by F.W. Murnau, which showed recently at the Oak Cliff Film Fest (which I wrote about a few weeks ago).

Sarris alway seemed sickly. He seemed to have green mold under his eyes, as if he did not come out into the light very often. Instead of a traditional briefcase or bag I remember Sarris carrying around our papers in a tennis bag, it just seemed strange, did he play inside? The lessons I learned from Sarris I have shared with both my students and you, my readers, over the years. While I have not read him in a long time, he had an impact on how I think about film. Perhaps I should go back and read his books again.

If this gets out before Tuesday night, come by the Studio Movie Grill in arlington at 7PM to see the work my students produced in their documentary workshop. I think you will enjoy them. Also, looking ahead, on July 18 the Angelika will be showing Shut Up And Play The Hits for one night. I will be doing a Q&A for this, so come on by.

I have been watching a lot of videos here; some very inspiring, some not so much. Last week I saw a screening of Allen Mondell’s latest film about the Peace Corps and how it has transformed many lives. The film is powerful and moving, with lots of great stories. Knowing Allen, this film gives us a bit of insight on what makes Allen tick and motivation behind his work over the years. I also went to see Prometheus in IMAX at Northpark. I think the management there thinks we’re all deaf (perhaps from being there too much), because the volume was cranked to eleven. Then there was the film; it was really depressing. The difference between seeing heartfelt work sent to us from all over the globe made by small crews and this CGI construction of a film with loud explosions and very little engaging story was striking. While the volume was over the top, the picture seemed to be nothing but expensive noise – seemingly made just because they could. Spending bucket-loads of cash and lots of creative energy, for what? I was really saddened for where we are in cinema now. I mean Ridley Scott is not a hack but this film, it looks like his heart was not into this. I know there are good films out there; so folks, just stay away from this one.

And if you are at home, you may want to watch The Newsroom, which premiered Sunday night (when I am writing this, so I literally just watched it). Those of you who have been around me for a while will know I am all about how media affects us. I am forever upset at the political imbalance and idiocy of talk radio (and forever hoping for a program director with guts to do something to heal and grow the city and country instead of growing the hate). From this same mindset comes The Newsroom, the new HBO show by Aaron Sorkin of West Wing, Studio 60, The Social Network, etc. In West Wing he gave us a president to believe in and a presidential staff fighting the good fight. He gave us the fantasy that the people in power were good. So now we have The Newsroom and in the first episode we get a rant right at the beginning (there is always a great self-righteous rant in a Sorkinville) from this TV anchor about how the U.S. is not the greatest country on Earth. It starts with the fact that there are many countries that have freedom and then goes on to list all the ways we are not number one, like infant mortality; then notes we are number one in percentage of people who believe in Angels, number one in incarcerating and in defense spending. Then he goes on to rant about how it was not always this way and ends with talking about a time when TV news was presented with men of dignity. Yeah, someone in the media saying that the screaming, unbalanced mess coming from news is the cause of our downfall. So do I think this show will shame network execs into changing their way? No, but just as the rant ends , you need to understand there is a problem before it can be fixed. Perhaps Sorkin is paving the way for a new kind of news, a news that inspires us, a news that has dignity, and that elevates. Until then, we have the Dallas VideoFest coming September 27-30 at the DMA (mark it on your calendars now). No visual noise!

Also, while you have your calendar apps open, the 11th Annual Asian Film Festival of Dallas is July 12-19th. You can always find a great mix of cinema, real cinema, animated cinema, anime, and fun at this event. Just go!

So have a great week all - stay inside and get inspired by a good film (or tv show).

The Romantic Self-Exiles explores relationships between self and home. It presents the life of those who live in-between, those who choose self-exile over a home in which they are not tolerated or welcome; and questions the romanticized aspect of such experiences by the self-exiled citizens.

“Morehshin Allahyari is a new media artist and an art activist. She was born and raised in Iran and moved to the United States in 2007. Her creative and research interest encompasses 3D animation, digital filmmaking, web-art / design, performance and extensive activity as a curator and producer. The topics of her practice include the social, political and cultural issues of Iran, creative writing, art activism, media art, and collaborative art. Morehshin’s animated films and curatorial projects have received world wide acclaim. She has been part of exhibitions, festivals, and conferences in Tehran, Denver, Dallas (Dallas Biennale + oliver Francis Gallery), Chicago, New York, Germany (The 7th Berlin International Directors Lounge (Berlin) + 25th European
Media Art Festival (Osnabrück), Virginia (The Taubman Museum of Art), San Francisco, Denton (University of North Texas), Portland, Ohio, Brazil, Sweden, Romania (Arad art Museum), Netherlands, and Canada.”

What Media is Morehshin consuming?

“You might have heard of this Iranian film called “This is Not a Film”… I was just watching it and thought you probably will really like it. The full thing is on youtube:

Panahi is baned to make any movie for 20 years in Iran or leave the country. That’s why this movie is called “This is not a Film”, and it’s about censorship, etc”

Here is a short film that captures the moment in a relationship when all communication has broken down; when neither partner wants to talk civilly for fear of having to admit they themselves have screwed up. Kight Haberer interrupts this moment with a neighbor who is acting anything other than neighborly. The film hilariously captures a couple trying to rediscover what they liked about each other in the first place.
